Japanese House Scan
Taliesin West
Scottsdale, AZ
It’s all about the
point cloud.
A week-long summer interdisciplinary intensive where we evaluated the status of the Japanese House structure built at Taliesin West and recommended preservation actions. While there I was able to use polycam to get more detailed imagery of the site, which was then 3D printed.
The isolated point cloud taken from the interior scan of the Japanese House at Taliesin West. The next image is the mesh derived from the point cloud. This was accomplished by simplifying the point cloud and running a mesh interpolation sequence in a software called meshmixer. In the next image, the mesh was repaired in Rhino, and made watertight. When making the mesh watertight, you are checking for open areas that need to be filled and overlapping vertices. Once the mesh is watertight, it can be 3D printed.
